Anticipation is growing ahead of the Presidential election who the opposition will present to challenge President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Earlier there were rumors that the UNP and the JVP would contest as single parties. However through the intervention of Ven. Maduluave Sobitha thero a number of opposition parties began to hold discussions on fielding a common candidate.
Once these discussions began speculation began to grow about who the common candidate would be, a few of the names that were tossed up included Opp. Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge, UNP Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya and Ven. Maduluwave thero himself.
However with the days drawing closer ahead of the expected date on which the election is expected to be announced new developments have surfaced.  Reports suggest that Opp. Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will contest as the common candidate of the opposition and it is also reported that he is holding discussions with UNP deputy leader Sajith Premadasa in-order to secure his fullest support ahead of the election.  Meanwhile sources also state that MP Karu Jayasuriya has engaged in secretive discussions with the Government. It could be speculated that these discussions were on the Presidential election as it was he who crossed over to the Government in 2007 along with 17 other UNP Parliamentarians.
